Is this the dog that is 'high maintence', or did I read that about another dog? I just went through my first loss, and it was so much harder than I ever imagined. But you know what? These pets of ours work magic when they are gone. They never leave you....your pain will ease, and your love will be refreshed often as they show up in spirit ALL THE TIME.... I swear I was visited last night, as I sat wickedly wide awake and alone in the dark at 3 am with the faint buzz of infomercial voiceovers wafting across this dank room, my eyes burning from lack of sleep. "The air smells like bloated worms dusted in dolomite", I opined silently. My thoughts were racing, searching, across the vast internet for some vestige of mental serenity, some niblet of drowsiness, as I battled this latest phase of mid-life anxiety. And then I heard it....tump tump...tump tump... the sound of my thick bellied pussycat as she hobbled down the stairs to greet me. For a moment, I felt delight, my own private magic.

He had bone cancer,it happened rather quickly.The dog never really wanted anything do with me accept for when i had food in my hands. If I was in one room he'd go into another this went on for 5 years.He wouldn't let me pat him unless my wife was in the room. So we're there spending our last final moments with him before they gave him the shot & I looked at him & said good-bye & he started licking my face.Damn dog had been playing me for 5 years.

Your wife's dog loved you. I have 5 pets and I couldn't imagine losing any of them. I have one cat that is 15+ years old. She is probably older than some of your kids. It's wonderful how animals become a part of your family and your life. Treasure the memories. On another note, to all the California Pygmys, please vote YES on Prop 2 this November. It's the right thing to do. All animals deserve to be treated humanely even those raised for food. If you want to know more about Prop 2. I had my old lab Ruckus at the vet's last month and I really thought she was at the end. Somehow she rebounds each time. This dog adopted me during the worst year of my life 12 years ago. My husband complains about how much she stinks and is underfoot, but he shuts it up when I point out that she's been in my life longer than he has. And it's endlessly funny to hear our 2-yr-old call her "Fuckus" because he can't make the R sound yet. *Change how you see, not how you look.*

I drove him to the vets to have him put down, due to cancer. When they took him out of my arms and he just stared at me with those sad eyes, I lost it. I cannot remember a sadder time in my life and never want to.

We got her right before we got married and she was our child for a lot of years when we didn't and couldn't have "real" kids. Bout 3 years ago hunting her was too painful but she seemed to get around pretty well until last Christmas. Every time we made the appointment she would rebound. Finally in spring, she wouldn't do anything but lay on her bed, eat, and would only go outside to go potty. I can only imagine what going through that without family was like for you Randy. 16 years was a good run for a lab. She lived a good life and added a lot to our family and we miss her dearly. She could have lived til 100 and having to put her down couldn't have sucked any less. Hugs to you SW too.
