well, given that this crew was for the most part, a generation older than me, I really wasn't interested in hearing about their current medical conditions,
including a knee replacement and some sort of bacterial infection that's been going on for 2 years. Blech. I don't want to hear about your bodies
failing - on account that's going to be me someday and I don't wanna know!

Cripes, WMN, that is something I abhor in dinner conversations (I never want to hear the word pylonital Cyst again in my life). It reminds me of a night I
spent in a hostel in the way northern rockies. As it would happen, there was a large group of older people staying there also on an "elderhostel"
tour. In the morning when I was eating my gorp I noticed that the older people easily divided into two groups. One group was combing over maps, discussing
the bike route they'd take that morning. The other group sat at another table and talked about their medication.
The active group looked happy, fun, and interested in life. The other group looked like they were just hanging around til their clocks ran out. I'm going to say on my application that the latter group's attitude is not welcome at my dinner table. Life's too short to be surrounded by people who are immersed in terminal bummerness. |

first post here... i wish i had found this site BEFORE i sent in my S20 app last week. it was full of bullet holes and honestly stands no chance of getting
even a pre-call (if they do those any more). god how i wish for a re-do.
i too want so badly for S21 -> forever. jeff is a good host, but if he decides not to carry on, maybe someone else will bring new blood and life to the program. thank you LP for getting all this information quasi-organized, and to the posters who have the breadth of insider info (without spoiling it). quick question- can a person send in more than one app per season? or would it be a waste of time? |

Lucius, there is no rule stating that you can only send in one application.

I'm pretty sure most of the crew is already Samoa bound. I'm pissed. I honestly don't know what the fuck these people want from me.

i posted this question on the video section of reality casting 101 this morning (not many posts have been there in a while so i thought i'd put it here as
well).
Hey LP- got a quick question for you (or anyone else who has had video success)... my video is an infomercial of sorts and was wondering if i should use title screens or voice overs for the varying sceens. voice overs may come off as gimicky and cheesy, but title screens almost seem lazy and there is nothing to grab the PA. unless there is music in the video. which brings me to another question- is some music okay? when would it be overkill? i will NOT be using survivor show intro music, that is for sure. thanks. lucius. |

no music. they want to see 3 minutes of you being you. being what/who you will be in confessionals and in the game.

thanks val. am guessing it's best to do a voice over as a moderator of sorts (ixnay on the usicmay). does it really matter if the video is 2 minutes vs. 3
minutes? not sure why this is so difficult...

i've always been one to say that the music really doesn't matter. obviously, don't let the music overpower what you're saying---and don't
throw some loud, distracting rap song in the background. however, I think music helps the video move along faster--the videos I've seen where people just
sit and talk with no music are good, but i feel like the casting assistants (being 22 year old, blonde, blackberry-obsessed socialites) probably wouldn't
actually think about what you're saying. I still think the best strategy is doing talking to the camera, using different scenes, and just being exciting.
keep them on the edge of their seats, be enthusiastic, and hope for the best.

I know of someone who received a callback and their video in terms of editing was horrible. It was converted from a mini dvd player to a vhs and there was a
lot of static between takes. However, that being said something must of caught their eye. there was no music in the background and no sub titles. So I would say
be entertaining without all of the sub titles and music in the background. I think they wanna see and hear what you have to offer. Background music is normally
a distraction.. Just my 2 cents

i've never seen an audition tape where I thought background music was distracting. you've got to think of it from a 22 year old california girl's
perspective. i feel like something with some music and a little more energy will catch their attention over someone sitting and telling their life story.
either way, this process, for the most part, is based around luck.

this is great feedback. i was thinking about 10 seconds of intro background music to set the hooks, get to the meat of the tape to reel 'em in, and finish
up with some outro music and some pictures of me over the last year or so (ala Jenny Guzon).
bird and 300- what are some of the "formats" you've seen or heard that work (other than sit and talk)? we all know to bring the energy- but do you let them in on real personal stuff (knowing that it may go national) or keep it a high level of information? how deep does one go to grab the audience? |

No one format is going to be the key. If you are what they are looking for you will get a call back. It is my personal belief that the main reason for the
video is so that they can see how comfortable you are in front of the camera and how articulate you are and how clearly you speak. I think they can tell if
they are interested in who you are based on your photo and paper app. There is obviously aomething in those questions that they watch for. I have only applied
once, so take what I say with a grain of salt.

I was told by a CA that they like music and such, his remark "its boring to just sit and watch peeps talking." It depends on the CA's.
