casting call roundup.. | #202 | ||
Note to 'Survivor' contestants: Be exciting, but no skits, please2:00 a.m. May 21, 2009 Adam
Fishman of Anaheim read notes from his hand yesterday during auditions for "Survivor" at Pala Casino. (John Gibbins / Union-Tribune) -
NORTH COUNTY - It was a room full of extroverts all trying to outdo each other. Some were there for a chance at the $1 million first-place prize, while others said they wanted to become a reality television star. Still others said they simply want to push themselves as far as they can. The CBS television show "Survivor," which pits contestants against each other in exotic, isolated wilderness locations around the world, held an open casting call yesterday at the Pala Casino that attracted roughly 1,000 people. "Don't chew gum, don't sing, this is not 'American Idol,' " Mike Maas, an executive producer of promotion for CBS, said to the throng of "Survivor" wannabes, each of whom would be given a two-minute audition before a camera. "Don't dance. Do not do a rehearsed skit, a skit you've prepared at home, or a poem. Do not do that. What the casting company is looking for is fun, exciting, dynamic people. If you are not fun or dynamic, try to be." Many of the potential contestants waited up to 10 hours to audition. People like Marc Perlman, 55, an unemployed sound editor from Los Angeles who said he planned on telling the show's producers, "I want a million bucks, and I'll do anything they want." There was James Kingston, 39, of Temecula, a mechanical engineer who said his girlfriend has been pushing him to try out for a long time. "I can do it," Kingston said. "I'm always looking for challenges in my life." He said it's not the money that attracted him, but the public exposure. "I've been on a reality dating show on the radio and in a magazine for a photo shoot with my car," he said. "I like doing different things all the time. I like doing things that take me out of my comfort zone." Jody Soto, 49, of Hemet said she's been a fan of the show since the beginning. A fifth-grade teacher, she said she was a little intimidated by the large number of young, attractive women at the casting call. "I'm feeling older and duller and flatter by the second," she said, laughing. "My pitch is that I'm fun and adventurous and that I'll have a good time and that looks are deceiving. I'm going to fly in under the radar and sneak up on them at the last minute." For Steve Lowenstein, 44, it was about the cash. "It's all about getting a million dollars and taking that money and trying to find a cure for rheumatoid arthritis, which is the disease my daughter has," he said. Lowenstein brought a didgeridoo, a wind instrument used by Australian aborigines, but he said the producers made it clear that props were not welcome. Several people got up and left when Maas told the crowd they had to be U.S. citizens to qualify. But convicted felons were no problem. "If you have a criminal record, it's OK," he said. "Just put it down on the application and give us a little synopsis. If you've paid your debt to society it's all good. Some of the best people I've met have criminal histories pages long." J. SEG is really thrilled that we haven't figured out what S20 will hold for sure.
I heard that they were having a party to celebrate the fact that we at pygmy island still haven't figured it out. Mark Burnett jumped up on stage to sing... Jeff picked up the bass and Lynne ran up to assist MB... this is the live video...

They aren't really looking for fun, exciting or dynamic people. What they are looking for are people who are comfortable in their own skin and don't
look like complete idiots/deer-in-the-headlights when talking in front of a camera, or can provide some "casting gold" (see, e.g., Coach, Randy,
etc.), or who clearly fit a pre-cast character (see, e.g., Sandy [crazy old lady], Jerry [military hero], all black women besides Cirie and Taj [angry and/or
lazy black female]). If they can't find that, then they settle for good looks. If you are good-looking (men) or have huge boobs (women - fake or real
doesn't matter), then you have a leg up whether you can talk to a camera or not or whether you'd play the game well or at all. Occasionally they let
slide through players who don't fit any of those categories, but not often. I mean, how many players have ever been really ass-ugly? How exactly are
models/bartenders/actors qualified as having "interesting, diverse, exciting lives" when if they were that interesting or diverse, they'd have a
career that did not require appearing on Survivor for a boost?
The application is a load of bull. They don't really look for people who can play the game, they look for what will look good on camera. Period. We've seen this agenda since at least S10. The game and the people cast have evolved since it started 20 seasons ago, but the application has not. Same stupid ass questions which don't tell you anything about who the person is or how they'd play the game (I mean - how exactly does knowing what magazine I read or what my favorite movie is tell you a damn thing about my character? Nothing, that's what. Or what my perfect day is? Not a damn thing other than how good my imagination is). I'll still apply because the show is still on the air, but I for one am sick and tired of hearing Lynne, et al. complain about the same boring applications coming in when they haven't updated their same boring application questions ever. Perhaps it's not the applicants, but the lame ass crappy questions we have to answer. /rant over |

i was kind of thinking about what you said, WMN--and it actually came to mind last night. most cast members either LOOK THE PART or just LOOK GOOD. for the
contestants above 40 or so, I don't think looks are of their biggest concern---that's where some of you pygmies get lucky. I think most of us who are
between 18 and 35 need to LOOK GOOD. Think of any "ugly" contestants we've seen--Denise, for example--but she looked the part--she was a lunch
lady with a mullet--so it didn't really matter. Angie from palau--not attractive in the least bit--but she had a ton of piercings and tattoos
(badass/outcast vibe). It's pretty shitty---but hey, some of us can make do with what we have.
SEG, call me.

No need to worry, they will feel our steely wrath in time. Also, I take great offense to LP's posted video clip above. I am the nastiest, freakiest little sex puppet out there!!! I've seen my share of sawdust through the years if you know what I mean even if it was in the Land of Make Believe, lol. |

Does SEG have to exlude certain people because of what they do (no, not just pygmies)?
The difference between stupidity and genius is that genius has it's limits.

It wouldn't surprise me if they did that. I recall some game shows that used to say something like, "employees of CBS, its affiliates, or its
sponsors, are not eligible for ..."
I think that Survivor operates under the network standards for game shows, and if they had a similar requirement it would be in keeping with trying to get on any other game show on CBS. |
