So SUSA, when are you going to come out and explain yourself? Pygmies are waiting to hear why you decided to go back and give it a try.

'Survivor' mom back in Iowa from Gabon By MARY CHALLENDER mchallen@dmreg.com Susie Smith was back in Charles City last week, coloring a customer's hair in her home salon and dodging the questions everyone kept flinging at her. The rules of the "Survivor" TV show dictated that she couldn't share her experiences until the show's 17th season, which begins at 7 tonight on CBS, had finished airing this winter. What happened in Gabon had to stay in Gabon. Smith, 47, said she's always been a busy mom, so at first she felt guilty leaving behind her husband, Todd, a police investigator in Charles City, and son, Trent, a high school sophomore and member of the cross-country team, even though they're always leaving her to go off on hunting trips. "I always put my family first," she said. "I was always the last one in line. This was a great escape. It actually taught me to be a little more selfish. My husband and son were the ones playing survivor at home." Smith, who also works as a para-educator in the resource room at Lincoln Elementary School, said she tried out for the show because she wanted to achieve something for herself while showing her students and others that all it takes to transform life is to try. The $1 million first prize provided incentive, too. Self-described as encouraging, moody and talkative - with a big "potty mouth" - Smith said she knew she was up against heavy odds just to win a spot but she'd beaten the odds in life before. Born in Hampton to a Mexican immigrant family of crop field workers, Smith said she grew up speaking Spanish at home and working alongside five siblings in the field. Despite helping raise three younger siblings, she managed to graduate from Marshalltown Cosmetology School and North Iowa Area Community College in Mason City. Smith is the second Iowan to appear on a season of "Survivor," according to publicist Brett Gold. Rory Freeman, a case manager for the City of Des Moines' housing services, made it about halfway through the show's ninth season in Vanuatu before being voted off. Twila Tanner, who grew up in Osceola, was a runner-up to appear on the show in the same season. Although Smith is forbidden to say how things worked out for her in Gabon, she did say her husband and son pulled off their end of things like champions. "When I came home, they had my house in order, the laundry was done and the refrigerator was full," she said. "That was very exciting." |

"Marshalltown Cosmetology School "
When I read that, my eyes inititially saw "Marshmallow Cosmetology School"
Tonight's your big debut, Susa! Hopefully who you really are will begin to make sense soon, because I am confused about you. We do expect answers to our burning questions.....all in the spirit of gamesmanship, of course. I will hold off judgement until I am better informed...

Susie, all the royal citizens will be rooting for you this season. I hope that you were able to show those bastards that the Pygmy
Islanders are not to be triffled with. You will be expected at a reception at the castle following the season finale for a royal celebration (regardless of
how you finish). And by the way, how bad is "Cupcake" missing me? You don't have to say, but I know she's wanting some of that King Friday.
Your job, my fair Susie is to grab Cupcake after the season finale and to pimp the concept of the Pygmy Island Only season. Good luck.

I have to say, after watching Susie play for the last couple of weeks, I have to wonder what SEG actually saw in her!!! Don't get me wrong, I'm glad a
Pygmy made it onto the show, but what the hell, she might as well be invisible! I just don't get why they continually pass over my videos, and the videos
of others on this site that would be interesting players, for nondescript players. I know that if I got the chance to play the game of Survivor, people would
remember who I was after the season was over. It would probably be for my temper or my jumping to the wrong conclusion(like I did on Lance's survivor
game), but I would definitely leave an impression. I'm not usually one to hide in the background. I just don't get what they saw when they chose
Susie. Maybe she can enlighten us when she's allowed to post.

Out of respect for dear Susa...
She may have been the biggest ass out there, but "her edit" hasn't begun yet.. the fact that she is hardly mentioned leaves me to believe that she is a second half story.. It seems as if she and Corrine and Charlie will be developed later... I didn't know if Charlie was still there? I assume he has his head up Marcus' butt.. I just can't see him? I am certain Susa won't remain quiet for long... she has never had the ability to bite her tongue here on the Island.
Hated by one of the most influential people in America!

Agreed. The jury is still out on Susa's character on the show. Who knows what went on that we are not seeing. Hopefully as the show matures we will see the
development of the more interesting characters on the show. Thankfully, most of them are still there.

Yes, I know she has a lot more story line since we really haven't seen much of her. I was just assuming she would be the same person on the show that she
is here....but it is better for her if she doesn't rock the boat.

Since I don't interact often with most other pygmies I have no emotional attachment to either Suzie or Randy. I feel as though I can have a more objective view of their edits. (I'm not claiming not to have opinions, just moderate objectivity.) Suzie is a non entity … she'll make the merge because she is no threat to individual immunity, but she is just another in a list of forgettable Survivor's. (Like the chubby girl booted early during the season they split the tribes by age/sex. Not only can't I remember the girls name but I forget which shitty season that was.) With different editing Suzie might have been portrayed more like Cirie a sort of heroine underdog.
Overall I find Gabon to be one of the lamest casts in quite some time. If I were a new viewer I don't know they could have hooked me with these pre-merge episodes. |

"Well actually I was voting for you" She says it to Corinne in the previews. I hope she gets more air time now.
